Energipole partners with Suez to deploy the 3WAYSTE process in Réunion Island

5 May 2021

A state-of-the-art sorting and recovery facility for an exemplary territory

A new household waste sorting and recovery plant has begun operations in Sainte-Suzanne, Réunion Island.
This major project marks a decisive milestone in advancing sustainable waste management across the region.

A strategic partnership built around the 3WAYSTE process

Energipole, holder of the territorial licence for the 3WAYSTE process, is partnering with Suez Environnement on this flagship project, developed jointly with Inovest (a Suez subsidiary) and 3WAYSTE.

This innovative technology enables optimal sorting, recovery, and energy production from household and commercial waste.
The facility will process 170,000 tonnes of waste per year under a 15-year contract worth €242 million, awarded by SYDNE, the inter-municipal waste management authority for northern and eastern Réunion.

Outstanding environmental performance

Thanks to 3WAYSTE technology:

  • nearly30% of waste will be transformed into recycled raw materials (cardboard, plastics, ferrous and non-ferrous metals) and compost
  • 48%will be recovered as solid recovered fuel (SRF) used to generate electricity, supplying around 22,000 households

This project will reduce landfilling by 72%, significantly exceeding France’s national target of 50% waste recovery by 2025 under the energy transition law.

A model for circular transition

The partnership between Suez, Energipole and 3WAYSTE reflects a shared ambition to build tangible, high-performance solutions for ecological transition while promoting local resource recovery.
A pioneering model for French overseas territories and beyond.
